The Bollywood production house Dharma Productions under Karan Johar has been around for quite some time now. Today the company is undertaking daring measures to expand its market share.
In December 2024, the Indian CEO of the Serum Institute of India, Adar Poonawalla, acquired a 50% stake in the Dharma Productions company for Rs. 1,000 crores. This deal with Rs. 2,000 crores is a new addition and a fresh start for Dharma now.
The investment by Poonawalla is not only monetary but is also human capital as well. It can also be said that VR intends to revolutionize the production, publishing, and consumption of content. Karan Johar said that “This association is about respecting the past but going for the future of entertainment.”
Why This Matters to Dharma Productions?
Dharma depended on studios and distributors to release its films. But Zee Studios’ Bhumika Tewari has come into the team, and now Dharma is also venturing into film distribution. Tewari’s successful record with movies like Good Newwz and Kesari puts her in a good position.
Dharma plans to gain more control over film distribution to increase revenue and control the better releases. This will place Dharma in a better position to handle it on its own, especially mid-budget films, which are always overshadowed. It could also work for the benefit of independent filmmakers, who could reach a wider audience with their film.
Financial Growth
It is evident that Dharma has had fluctuations in profit. But, the company has remained steady. In FY 2022-23, it generated tremendous revenue of Rs. 1,044 crores and Rs. 656 crores from distribution rights only. This growth shows the capability of the new distribution venture.
Targeting Dhadak 2 and a legal drama with the star cast, Dharma Productions is all set for 2025. The collaboration with Poonawalla will assist Dharma in expanding this reach and make further enhancements to Bollywood. It is a significant step toward ensuring that Dharma evolves into a global entertainment company.
